The walk into an interview can be a nerve-wracking experience (or being in the virtual waiting room). However, by following some practical tips, you can greatly enhance your chances of getting the job. Here are some key factors that contribute to a great interview:

  1. Preparation is key!

    1. Go to the company website and read their mission statement, values, and culture. Without sounding robotic, use their own keywords multiple times in your interview.

    2. Find a “free word cloud generator” online.

      1. Paste the main job description into the generator.

      2. See which words or themes are most repeated.

      3. Use these words when describing your experience during the interview.

    3. Come prepared with specific questions that demonstrate your interest and show that you've done your homework about where the company is at.

  2. Make a personal connection.

    1. During the interview, just be yourself and let your personality shine through. Recruiters want to get to know the real you. Be funny (yet professional), show your concerns, embrace “awkward silences” (those can be very powerful!)

    2. Don’t be afraid of sharing recreational stories, and not just work stories. Share relevant personal experiences that highlight your skills and values. This helps the recruiter understand who you are beyond your paper qualifications.

  3. Ask insightful questions. Avoid generic questions like "What's your favorite thing about the company?" Show that you’ve done your research into the company.

Remember, the interview is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your fit for the position and make a lasting impression. By preparing thoroughly, making a personal connection, and asking insightful questions, you can greatly increase your chances of getting the job offer!
