Many pastors use the quip as a foundation of their ministry:
“To know God, and to make Him known."
These are the two principles that seem to permeate every ministry of a local church. And it's good!
But then there were Millennials...
As you study the statistics on Millennials, you'll hear a consistent "age of disconnect" rhetoric. Likely, this is because of the technology and screens they grew up with which took their attention off of "deep connections" with people in their presence.
Nonetheless, a proper study of the generation will also lead you to conclude one more statement. We're not just trying to know God. Nor are we just trying to make Him known. We are also looking to become known. We want our Story to be heard, loved, and honored. We want connection. Therefore, there's another phrase we could add to the quip:
“To be known."
This means to be known in two ways:
(1) By our Creator
(2) By other people (and to be respected/loved)
But we are either safe but not fully known, or fully known but not safe. Here's the gospel: with God, you are fully known and fully safe. Further, there are a number of good men and women who will be safe with you, and aren't afraid to become fully known together.
I'm proud to say that RCC's counseling method fosters all three parts of this mission statement.
Throughout this process:
(1) To know God - we dive right into our identity in Christ. We cultivate a biblical understanding of who you are, what God thinks of you, what you ought to think of God, and what is your hope. To know Him is to be in the Word. We do Bible studies throughout the process. We develop a good anthropology (how God views you). We want you to feel His mercy and to devote your life to Him.
(2) To make Him known - When you realize your giftedness and design, you are encouraged to use them! Use them to serve others. Use them to make God known! Represent Him to others! When you're doing what you're designed to do, others will see God naturally and you barely even have to try!
(3) To be known - I can vouch that my coach still knows me in a way unlike anybody else I know! He brought out stories I'd never shared with anyone! You get to this when you share these intimate moments in your life, these meaningful moments, another soul recognizes the importance of each story and allows you to have it as a keepsake. A good coach will see each of your Stories as valuable, confidential, and useful.
As we look at your design and Life Stories,
we seek to know God so that He will redeem and re-purpose each story.
we seek to use your life to show God to others.
we happen to become deeply known, and fully safe, alongside one another, as God already knows us.
